Today the authorization that the Government stipulated to the Google company for the installation of the longest submarine fiber optic cable in the world, with 13,500 kilometers in length, which will link the country with the United States, became official.

The execution of the work will transport traffic quickly and safely between North America and South America, which will improve Internet connectivity. This is the Firmina project, promoted by the company Google Infraestructura SRL. The decision was formalized through Resolution 1606/2022 of the National Communications Entity (Enacom) published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette.

A submarine cable will be installed at a depth of 4,000 meters in the Argentine Sea, through which it will connect the country with a mooring point in Las Toninas, province of Buenos Aires, with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, United States. The cable will have derivations to the cities of Punta del Este, in Uruguay, and Praia Grande, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.

The work highlighted that it will import a significant benefit for Argentina, taking into account the growing demand for services that needs more and more infrastructure capacity in telecommunications, especially in the international segment.

The entity also stressed that it will be the longest cable in the world, capable of operating with a single power source at one end of the cable, in case its other power sources are temporarily unavailable.

and secure connection between North and South America, with 12 fiber pairs, which will provide fast, low-latency access to Google products such as search, Gmail and YouTube, as well as Google Cloud services, emphasized.

Google explained that the name of the cable was chosen in honor of Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825-1917), a Brazilian author and abolitionist “whose 1859 novel, Úrsula, describes the life of Afro-Brazilians under slavery.” Posted by Wildwestdominio, news and information agency.
